Deportation:
The sandal represents the journey my mom had to undertake. The wear and tear on a pair of sandals reflect the hardships and emotional toll of the deportation process. They also symbolize the warmth and comfort of home, something that's been taken away. The simplicity of sandals remind me of the suddenness and the stripped-down reality my mom faced. They also represent resilience, as sandals are often worn in tough climates and terrains, much like enduring a challenging life event. The jeans represent the strength and struggle my mom went through. The heel represents all the weight my sister had to carry on after my mom leaving. Lastly, the sandal, being part of everyday life, might now evoke memories of my mom and the life she had before deportation. I choose this because whenever I see a sandal it reminds me of my mom, she was always wearing sandals. This trauma connects to World War I because it was a major conflict that took place from 1914 to 1918 and families were separated, and many lives were lost or forever changed. I feel like going through this effected many children not being able to grow with a parent figure.
